ACROBAT 3D

Acrobat 3D, the latest product from Adobe's stable, was released in the latter half of January 2006. This product allows users to create PDF documents with embedded 3D designs created by any computer aided design (CAD) application. If you are an Acrobat Professional 7.0 user, Acrobat 3D has all the features of Acrobat Pro. 7.0, with, of course, the extra capability of embedding 3D objects/models.

This software was developed to assist any 3D guy (or girl) to share their work more effectively and more efficiently. Apart from embedding 3D models, Acrobat 3D also allows users to add lightning effects, textures and even simple animations like putting together and breaking apart any model one is working upon. Another positive factor about Acrobat 3D is that it allows users to view PDFs, with embedded 3D models, using their free Acrobat Reader (read v 7.0, get it, its free). As if these features weren't good enough, the good folks at Adobe have also programmed Acrobat 3D to allow users to place 3D objects directly into Microsoft' s Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This could explain why the next version of MS Office, (codenamed Office 12 and slated for release in the second half of 2006), will have a "Save to PDF" option.

Having worked in DTP, I can say with assurance at how Acrobat Professional 7.0 has made my life easier. Sometimes, one can only wonder as to how customers can review their documents if it weren't for Acrobat Professional. Imagine a scenario where we have to read the customer's comments/instructions from a word processing software. We'd probably have to work twice as hard (and probably NOT earn twice as much). One aspect that I could think at the top of my head is the way in which 3D models can be send for review. Acrobat 3D will not only reduce the size of the document - if compared to the original file from the 3D application, but it will also allow for a much better communication, as far as changes are concern, between the customer and the 3D artist. All this without the customer having to actually own any additional software apart from the good old Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.0 (or better). Even though I'm not really a fan of Macintosh, I believe I must remain neutral and say that the downside to Acrobat 3D is that it's only available for Windows platform.
